Continued poking at this and SOLVED #1 – there is a setting under Theme Options>Title and tagline

SOLVED #4 – the set up for Bootstrap under Theme Options does allow the choice of centered and then I added the following to my Custom Css

/*removes gradient block on slider*/
.carousel-control.left {
background-image: none;
background-repeat: repeat-x;
}

.carousel-control.right {
background-image: none;
background-repeat: repeat-x;
left: auto;
right: 0;
}

#bootstrap-slider .layout-center {
background: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0) none repeat scroll 0 0;
bottom: -8px;
left: 0;
padding-bottom: 20px;
right: 0;
text-align: center;
width: 100%;
}

And to raise the button from the bottom

#bootstrap-slider .carousel-caption .button {
background: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.4) none repeat scroll 0 0;
border-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.8);
border-width: 2px;
bottom: 15px;
box-shadow: none;
position: relative;
}

Still working on #2 and #3 – if I figure it out I will post back – otherwise maybe someone else has the solutions
