    I wish to show content via a widget at the top of the categories page please can you advise where I would add the do_shortcode WP function for the categories page to enable me to add the widget

    Hi,

    You should use header widget to show content via a widget at the top of the categories page.
    First, Enable header widgets via theme options.
    Theme Options -> Header -> Header Widgets -> Number of widget cols in header
    Theme Options -> Header -> Header Widgets -> Header widgets placement ( set as all pages )

    Second, Set header widget via widget area under appearance.
    Appearance -> Widgets -> Header Widget
