Hi, I am optimizing the site for SEO. Bing found the following issue:

Evaluated size of HTML is estimated to be over 125 KB and risks not being fully cached.

Recommended Action:
Ensure that the page source does not contain large amounts of CSS or code at the top of the page. Consider moving code and styles into separate files.

SEO Explanation:
Search engines may not fully acquire the content on a page if the page is contains a lot of code. Extraneous code can push the content down in the page source making it harder for a search engine crawler to get to. A soft limit of 125 KB is used for guidance to ensure all content & links are available in the page source to be cached by the crawler. This basically means if the page size is too big, a search engine may not be able to get all of the content or may end up not fully caching it.

My pages are relatively small but they take a while to load even WITHOUT the sliders. I have not added any custom CSS. What can be done to make them lighter? I am not using quite a few features, such a woocommerce, sliders, maps, etc. What can be removed from the header to make it lighter?

Hi, do you have any response to the issue of the theme loading so slow? Just try this page: https://powerofaloe.com/benefits/. According to http://www.webpagetest.org/ it takes almost 9 seconds to load. It has a little bit of text and a 13K image. Do you have any solutions? Thanks!

I would suggest to disable plugins which are built in with the theme e.g. Layer Slider, Revolution slider, if you don’t use them. other tools shows page speed is 95% http://gtmetrix.com/reports/powerofaloe.com/iBoJOi7L

I only use Revolution slider. How do I disable the other sliders? I don’t know what 95% means on that site, but the ultimate measure for the end user/customer is the load time, which is huge for such a small page. Therefore, any specific advice on how to lighten up the theme will be much appreciated.

I disabled the majority of JavaScript options in the Extra tab of the theme and disabled the Layer and Flex sliders. I cleared cache on the server and ran your GTMetrix test again. Page size INCREASED by 250K, Speed Grade slightly worsened to 94%, although the page loads faster by a mere 0.5 seconds. http://gtmetrix.com/reports/powerofaloe.com/lPkvLwg4.

You might be interested in this example for reference. The grade speed is lower, at 90%, but note that a 12MB page with running video loads in just 3 seconds. http://gtmetrix.com/reports/www.yottaa.com/9QAg8220.

So practically, there is no improvement. Do you have other suggestions? Again, this is not only poor end user experience, but this is also bad for SEO.

I would recommend also to use a cache plugin, e.g. W3 total cache to handle the javascripts. also there are plugins Boxer, JetPack which slow down the page speed. anyway, if you would like to have 1-3 seconds page, it would need to look like google.com 🙂

Roman, the W3 Total Cache made a lot of difference. Thank you for your advice. Also removed Boxer. For your information, when I run the Google Page Speed Report, the ONLY red alert is this:

Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content

As far as the 3-second page load time – this seems to be the standard now for websites. See http://mashable.com/2014/12/24/website-faux-pas/. See #2 – “…40% of visitors will leave your website if it takes longer than 3 seconds to load.”
