Last night I have updated the theme but after the update settings/elements went “party”. Bellow are the details:

    1. I have created backup of my website using Updraftplus Backups plugin.
    2. I have activated default WP theme twenty-something whatever it is actual atm.
    3. I have deleted evolve plus 2.9.7
    4. I have uploaded, installed and activated evolve plus 2.9.8

Final outcome was that all the settings have been lost. Header, footer, pages formatting… everything. I have tried to customize everything again, applied some settings but it has turned out that not only homepage has been in a mess but all the other pages too and that was simply to much things to do.

What is interesting is that after I have restored evolve-plus 2.9.7 most of the settings have been restored (as expected) but I have lost website name and website tagline in restored version (they were not restored because of the reason unknown to me).

I am looking forward to see and advice / suggestions on this. Thank you.

Well, actually, the way you do it – this can be easily anticipated. You should never update the theme the way you described. The correct way is to upload the new version through FTP and unzip it in the themes folder, so that only the changed files of the theme would be replaced. Otherwise, it is completely normal and this is how WP works, that steps 3-4 wiped out and reset the database table, where all your settings are stored. This is not an issue nor it is a malfunction of the theme. In any case, once you’ve successfully updated the theme to 2.9.8, you will have a new option of updating it just like your plugins are updated, for example – right in your admin area. This is the big news of this release. Then you will not have a problem like this ever again (however, it is still a good idea to back everything up every time before an update).

Ohh I see. I was not sure if that is exactly going to happen (by removing the theme first). However, I was following the lines from the instructions at the theme docs page.

    Quote:
“In order to update your Theme4Press theme, simply install a backup plugin, which will help you to revert the current version of the theme, if something went wrong. For example UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup plugin. After the backup, you can proceed to the update.

Navigate to the Appearance Themes and remove the current version of the theme. Once the theme is successfully removed, you can continue to the install section.”
    End of quote:

I believe that you will agree with me that this is a bit confusing. Anyway, as you have added a new way of theme updating this should not happen anymore. By the way, might be wise to update the docs regarding this new change at the theme webiste 🙂

Also, it seems to me that there are some more settings added to the theme customizer in this version (at least I can’t remember I saw them before) and they are great.

Thanks for the so fast reply. Going to update the theme following the instructions you posted within your reply.

Thanks for the heads up. It IS outdated and will be taken care of. And yes, from now on please just use the API key to make the update as easy as a breeze.

Hi. Restore the last correct looking theme version (like you’ve said you would) and send again admin and FTP access in a private message.Thanks.

    Added Germany.

Btw, not sure why website gets so many backend admin login attempts as neither we have any traffic atm neither we are popular. Yet, I had to add all those security measures as we have been affected by malware long time ago.
