Hi. Why do you need to activate the theme? You just unzip over the old one, that’s the way you should do it (with cPanel or ssh). What version was updated to 2.9.9.9?

That’s probably because you didn’t have to just remove it, you needed to remove theme4press core plugin as well, and redux. Because they are old and incompatible. If you didn’t remove them after the update, then please do it now, especially the t4p core.
The automatic update is a relatively recent feature. And it was unfortunately broken in 2.9.9.9, so soon we will publish version 3.0 of the theme and there this feature will be fixed. BTW, you didn’t need any plugin – you just had to remove the old theme and then upload the new one. But anyway, glad it is OK now.
